Women are often presented as the victims of their own hormons“, Verena said at the beginning of our conversation and from that moment on I was impressed by her opinion. „Quotes like „Why are you so mad, are you on your period again? show how often women aren’t being taken seriously.“, she says. „Maybe I am really pissed off and there’s a good reason for that or I have a bad day like everybody else does sometimes“, the 24-year-old continues. But not just stupid sayings like these bug the journalist, it’s also how commercials, media, relatives and friends handle the topic menstruation. „It starts with tampon commercials where some blue fantasy-liquid is shown and women jump around because they are so happy they’ve gotten their period again“, says Verena. „The taboo is being created righ there.“

In Verenas opinion the media has a great responsibility that it doesn’t always stand up to. Especially magazines targeting young women often make mistakes. „Most of them only give you tipps on how to act on your crush, or in what manner not to behave, like farting in front of your boyfriend or not shaving your legs or talking about your period.“ There’s no agenda in media concerning real issues. If magazines or newspapers like the TAZ write about menstruation and show a picture of bloody underpants people are grossed out. „Society suggests that, apart from having pain, we ought to feel bad for having the period.“ Verena finds herself in this kind of thought pattern sometimes. „I ask myself, you know, is it gross to have sex while I’m on my period?“

With 12 years Verena had gotten her period for the first time, and her mum, being a single parent, was very open about it, which influenced Verenas way of dealing with this taboo issue. But having an open minded parent is not all it takes, the now 24-year-old knows now. „Women on their period are seen as being tainted, but society wants us to be clean and beautiful, so that we’re good enough.“ But it’s time for us to not give a shit about what others may think or feel about our period. „In schools they need to teach the kids that menstruation is not a dirty business and perfectly natural.“ A study that was published recently says that over 70% of young men aren’t interested in knowing about menstruation and think it’s embarrasing. „Boys need to be sensibilized in this issue. It’s horrendous that so many boys think that this issue is embarrasing, even though without it they wouldn’t even exist.“
